Hire A Six

For many years as a sales manager, I would only hire the stereotypical sales representative. You know the typeon a human relations continuum or scale of zero to ten, with the ten representing a candidate who is totally gregarious and outgoing and the zero, someone who is introverted with few people skills, I’d always recruit the ten. As an advisor to businesses and professional service firms on how to build an effective sales team, I would also council my clients to hire “tens.” Big mistake!

Pareto’s principle (the 80/20 Rule) is vividly illustrated in most industries by the fact that 80 percent of the sales are closed by only 20 percent of the sales professionals. After 24 years of working with literally thousands of sales representatives and service industry professionals as an advisor, trainer and coach, I have learned an important truth–that the ten personality is rarely found in the ranks of the top 20 percent of the sales professionals who produce 80 percent of the sales. For this reason alone, I now hire candidates that fall about a six on the personality continuum and I council my clients to do the same.

Why hire a six? Because the six personality makes up the vast majority of today’s top sales producers. And they are successful at selling, simply because they have a six personality. They are a bit reserved and a lot less outgoing than the ten, but they still have the people skills to communicate well. They do less talking than a ten and they listen better, giving them a decided edge in communicating effectively. Although six personalities have less charisma than a ten, they have a much greater ability to deal with the details of the selling process. This helps them to consistently find new prospects and to organize their day to get more done than an eight ro ten personality. Their ability to produce leads, the effective use of time and their systematic approach to presentations, gives the six personality a selling edge. Most sales professionals with a ten personallity absolutly loath prospecting, paperwork and organizing themselves, so they simply rely on their personality and charm to achieve their sales objectives.

You have to hire smart to develop a sales team that are all “top producers.” You don’t have to live with an 80/20 rule sales team, if you truly understand the personality of the sales or service industry professionals who make up the 20 percent and then only hire candidates that fall into this demographic. However, there’s one problem with this suggestion. You rarely can find a candidate that is in the top 20 percent, who is actively looking for new employment. And, a company or firm would be crazy to let their top producers leave them. Most employers usually do everything in their power to retain their best performers. Your only recourse then is to hire someone from the 80 percent grouping with potential to be a top producer. And how to do this must be the topic for another article

Best wishes for continued sales success.

Job Hunting Using the Web to Win

The Internet offers huge opportunities for a job seeker, but also presents several possible challenges. It also adds great complexities, and a lot more matters to consider…and be careful of.

Job search needs to be thought of as a highly personal, very directed marketing operation where you are the product. Your resume is an advertisement. Your extended network is your source for information and opportunities.

So where does the internet fit in? At AA-Careers, we just posted a job on Craigslist and got over 600 applications in a week. For one job. That’s increased competition.

Had a suitable candidate contacted us before we posted the ad, they could have landed the job prior to running in to all that competition. How? By knowing someone at our office who became aware of the job prior to posting. Everyone knew of the job for at least 13 days before it was posted. Who in your network might know of a job that’s coming available soon?

Be careful how you submit your application as well. When we did an analysis of the 650 resumes, we found a large number of errors. 63% of the applicants were easily eliminated with a swift triage process. How? The same way any hiring manager would. By passing over resumes where the objective didn’t match our job posting. By passing over prospects whose cover letters gave us grounds not to hire them, like "I know I’m overqualified but I really need a job". By eliminating candidates whose documents that didn’t open properly. And by eliminating prospects who didn’t trouble to spell check their cover letter and/or resume.

So the great news is that job sites give you a feel of what companies are hiring, and for what kinds of jobs. But once those jobs are posted, the competition is intense. You can still compete, if you have a well honed resume, designed to appeal directly and clearly to the recruiter. And if you have practiced interviewing – so you don’t stumble at a critical point.

Another potential problem to be aware of is how quickly you can be looked up on the internet. As we Googled several job hunters, we ran into some personal web pages that were in questionable taste. Nothing crazy, but enough to swing our thoughts about who to employ.

AA-Careers provides a comprehensive set of services for Bay Area job seekers, providing our clients a personal career consultant, a managed job hunting campaign, modern tools like a personal website, video, highly targeted resume, and much more. Let us know if we can help you.

Be careful out there, and good hunting!

Don’t Buy Flatware until You Know What to Loo ...

The equipment you stock may be as important as the food you cook when owning a catering business, function centre, or restaurant. Because the utensils your patrons feed with effect the manner in which they experience their dishes, this idea is especially true for table cutlery. Before choosing the best cutlery for your business, there are a lot of different qualities of flatware and silverware you need to consider. To give you assistance, we’re giving you this brief cutlery introduction to spoons, forks, and knives.

The Quality Of Your Cutlery Is Immediately Experienced In The Handle

The tackiness or costliness of your cutlery one of the initial details your clients inspect when they sit down to the table in your restaurant. The minute they pick up a knife, fork, or spoon, they will get an idea of whether you offer the best fare or if you offer the worst. A solid handle is a good indicator of first class cutlery.

The Feel Of Your Business Is Established By The Fashion Of Your Cutlery

The aura of your establishment must reflect the fare you serve and the pattern of your cutlery can take away from or accent that ambiance. The idea that individuals initially experience by sight has been long held. A modern cutlery pattern for modern food and a classic cutlery pattern for classic food is best thought about.

Add In Your Percentage Of Breakage When Pricing Your Cutlery Choices

Just know that cheap cutlery is likely to bend or be damaged and is designed to be replaceable. However, there is nothing worse than spending all of your money on fancy cutlery if you’re merely going to have it all washed down the drain.

Why an Analog Notebook Improves Sales Success

Do you search through piles and files on your desk looking for prospect and customer information? If you do, you need a simple system to eliminate this wasted time. Some salespeople have tried using digital technology to improve this sales nightmare. I was one of them and finally gave up, reverting back to the tried and true analog method of a pocket spiral notebook.

New technology including the computers and cell phones doesn’t always work faster or better than a simple analog system. Many salespeople are simply not able to take advantage of digital and wireless technology everywhere. Fortunately, there is one analog sales tool we should never be without. The old fashioned pocket spiral notebook always works and should be within reach of a sales person.

One Location for Notes

Salespeople can simplify note taking and record keeping with a pen and spiral notebook. The spiral notebook has the advantage of instant access, zero warm up time, always on and easy to operate. I prefer the spiral notebook because it can fit inside a small purse or jacket pocket.

Having one location for all your notes makes selling easier. You can always find important information and details of any conversation. Skipping through your notes becomes faster when you adopt this simple one location method. As you finish each notebook, you can date it and file it. After I transfer my notes from the notebook to my computer, I cross out the notes and keep the page intact. If you never tear out a page, you will have a nice record for filing later.

Predictive Dialers – Human Interaction Maximi ...

Predictive dialers are many steps removed from their predessors, the automatic dialers of the past. Whereas automatic dialing allowed callcenter agencies to dial numbers quickly and efficiently, predictive dialing also processes and makes use of a whole range of information, linking callers to live voices every single time. In fact, with predictive dialing, agents’ ‘talk time’ has increased from an average of twenty minutes per hour to fifty minutes per hour. This is a fabulous rate of improvement – instead of wasting more than half of their time on listening to busy signals and answering machine messages, agents now spend the majority of their time engaged in producting interaction. The dialer also manages the line to agent ratio by pacing the call rate at the desired level. In this way, quotas are met, and agents are neither idle nor overwhelmed. In other words, because the hardware and software does its job, agents are able to spend much more time doing theirs. And of course, increased contact time means that the center’s goals are reached much more quickly.

In many ways, it is still true that the real value of a call center depends on its ‘human capital’ – the agents who interact with clients and potential clients. The more the center’s human capital is brought to the forefront, the more everyone benefits. The aim of technology, therefore, is to maximize the time that agents are able to spend doing what only they can do – conversing, communicating, interacting. Predictive dialing and other call center technology represents a perfect symbiosis between person and machine.

A predictive dialing system is able to keep track of which agents are available, while monitoring the responses to the outgoing calls that it makes. Numbers that are busy, disconnected, fax lines, or calls that are answered by machines or voicemail systems are not connected to an agent. Only the calls that are answered by a live voice are put through to an agent, which means that the agent spends almost all of his or her time on the line with a live person. Facilitating and maximizing talk time is the goal of every call center.

The hidden benefit in all this is the fact that the agent is much less likely to get bored or disheartened. Human contact is important to everybody, and particularly to those who select careers that highlight communication. Many of the agents who choose to work in call centers are there precisely because they are attracted to the work due to the fact that they have excellent communication skills and enjoy interacting with people. An endless stream of answering machines or busy signals is bound to frustrate them. When they are able to spend fifty minutes out of each hour actually interacting with clients, however, the agents find that time goes by much faster and their workday is more varied and interesting. Furthermore, they know that their skills are valued, and that their company supports them by investing in the appropriate technology.

Predictive dialing technology is improving all the time. One problem that we occasionally still encounter is a short lag between the time the outgoing call is answered and the time the agent gets on the line. Generally, this is only a matter of a few seconds, and some systems play a short recorded message during this time. Nevertheless, any sort of lag time increases the possibility that the potential client will become confused, and that part of the agent’s talk time will be spent sorting out the confusion. There is also the chance that the client may hang up. Therefore, measures are being taken to speed up voice connects and minimize this lag time to the point where it may become imperceptible.

Predictive dialing has revolutionized call centers, and has the potential to continue doing so. Calls are made much more efficiently, employees are happier, and the goals of the call center are likely to be me much faster. Now that this technology is readily available (and improving all the time) it would be almost unthinkable for any sizable call center not to invest in predictive dialers.

Prodialing strives to provide concise information concerning the high tech arena of callcenters, including predictive dialers, inbound/outbound, IVR and much, much more. See our website at ProDialing.com (http://www.prodialing.com).

The Most Important Word in a Business Letter

What do you think it is? Many experts insist it’s the word “you.” Why?

When most of us read anything, we’re looking for something that interests us. What do we need at that moment? What will we need tomorrow? Why should we bother to read this story?

Self-interest is what motivates us to comb our hair, brush our teeth, and seek that new job promotion. It’s what makes us change college majors, change careers, or move to a different city.

Yet many sales letters – many of which cross my desk – neglect to personalize the message by using the critical word “you.” That’s tragic, because “you” is rated one of the English language’s most powerful motivators.

A few years ago, it’s reported that a major university conducted a study to find the most persuasive words. “You” topped the list, followed by the words money, save, new, and results.

So, how can you work this wonderful word into more of your writing? Here are a few suggestions:

1. Find a way to use the word “you” in the headline. Headlines are reportedly read four times more often than the rest of the story.

2. If your letter doesn’t have a headline, can you work “you” into the first sentence?

3. Consider putting the word “you” into each paragraph.

4. Use “you” as a way to convert features into customer benefits. Example: “Our new fabric keeps your shirt looking fresh. And our new spring line offers you five vibrant solid colors.”

5. It’s said that the second best-read part of a business letter is the P.S. Therefore, you should probably consider using “you” there, too.

Final question: If “you” is the most important word in the English language, should you consider using it more?
