The MiFi has hit the UK market, bringing with it significant advantages over traditional 3G internet connections. The compact MiFi equipment is the latest in the range of 3’s mobile broadband products.
About as small as a pack of cigarettes, the MiFi has no sinuous wires dangling from it. A sleek and easy-to-carry tool, it can greatly enhance mobile broadband use. The MiFi will allow the user to connect five pieces of internet-compatible equipment to a single 3 mobile broadband connection. The user can have five different people using the same connection simultaneously through different points of access. It is equivalent to multiplying the mobile broadband connections at the base cost of a single connection.
In addition, connecting through WiFi is cheaper than traditional 3G because WiFi connections consume lower battery power. Using the MiFi will give users this advantage too. 3 currently offers two 18-month schemes for MiFi – 3GB of data over 3 months with wireless modem for £99.99, or 5GB pm at £15 plus costs of MiFi to be paid separately.
The MiFi has been in use in the US for a while now. However, 3 is the first to introduce the gadget in the UK. It remains to be seen how users in the UK rate its performance, and whether its advantages truly translate into better browsing experience and economical internet connectivity.
